One River Project

Turn Back to The River

Murray Bridge, 2013

Turn Back to the River was one of ten regional projects forming part of the national One River Project.

My regional project took place during a three month residency in Murray Bridge consulting with the local community, and installing postcards and camera obscura inside disused railway carriages along the wharf to reveal stories and memories from the Murray river. Many local community individuals (indigenous and non-indigenous) provided support to this project by sharing their stories, photographs and memories.

Following regional outcomes across the country, elements from each One River project came together in August 2013 as part of the Centenary of Canberra program of events and celebrations. I created another immersive sensory experience via a camera obscura inside the Cygnet (an electric commercial vessel) on Lake Ginninderra. The boat took participants on tours of the upside down lake as they sat inside the intimate darkened interior. Please visit Turn back to the river // Canberra and Work // Videos for a glimpse of the documentation!

One River is a Centenary of Canberra project proudly supported by the ACT Government and the Australian Government. More information about One River can be found here. My local residency Turn Back to the River was supported through the 2012 Qantas Foundation Encouragement of Australian Contemporary Art Award, the Rural City of Murray Bridge, and Sunnyside accommodation.
